Mesothelioma Awareness Day Takes Place September 26

Mesothelioma Awareness Day Takes Place September 26 - All supporters, volunteers and patients affected by the asbestos-related cancer mesothelioma will help recognize Mesothelioma Awareness Day this Sunday on September 26, 2010. The Mesothelioma Applied Research Foundation (MARF), the non-profit organization that started the campaign in 2005, expects this year’s event to be the most impactful one yet.

For this year’s Mesothelioma Awareness Day, a 14’ by six-foot banner in New York City will highlight malignant mesothelioma. According to MARF’s Web site, EHE International donated the Rockefeller Plaza display window for the entire month of September, allowing MARF to promote awareness on a much larger scale.

In addition to the banner, MARF is asking others to join them in New York City on September 26 during the taping of the Today Show. They are encouraging spectators to create their own Mesothelioma Awareness Day signs to attract attention, which is customary for attendees of the show.

MARF is also continuing their successful radio campaign, which asks the public to contact their radio stations and request music by Warren Zevon, an American rock singer who died of malignant mesothelioma in 2003. They ask that a 20-second blurb about the cancer follow the song.

Last year, Senator Patty Murray (WA) and Congresswoman Betty McCollum (MN-4) introduced resolutions that would designate September 26 as National Mesothelioma Awareness Day. MARF reports the bill is close to passing. Senator Murray and Congresswoman McCollum have also worked on fully banning the use of asbestos in the United States. Since 2002, Senator Murray has worked hard by introducing the bill S. 742, Ban Asbestos in America Act. The bill has not yet been signed into law.

Until Mesothelioma Awareness Day becomes recognized on the national level, MARF is asking the public to contact their local government about recognizing Mesothelioma Awareness Day as an official day in their city.
